The memories came flooding back for Residents as we moseyed along the boardwalk at Coney Island this week. Most had not seen the boardwalk for twenty plus years and were shocked by evolution of the landmark. For some this was their first experience of the iconic destination.
We filled every seat of our 15 passenger bus and 7 passenger van to make the pilgrimage to Coney Island. While there we visited the New York Aquarium to see various exhibits of exotic fish, sharks and jellyfish. The Residents were able to take in a Sea Lion Celebration at the Aqua Theater. The 500-pound sea lions jumped and danced as we clapped along with the audience. Catherine Becker, who recently celebrated her hundredth birthday, exclaimed that the sea lions were like children. (According to this former teacher they were having too much fun!)
For lunch we stopped in the shade to savor nostalgic Nathan’s hot dogs. No one was up for a ride on the Cyclone rollercoaster, not even Mother Alice. However our future postulant, Rachael Lowe and our summer worker, Emily Zweber mustered up the courage for the Steeplechase. We returned home ready for a nap and full of new stories to share about the lovely outing.
